Holika Puja is performed on the day preceding Holi. As indicated by legend, Hiranyakashipu exhausted and furious with his child, Prahlad’s commitment for Lord Vishnu, asked his sister, Holika, to assist him with killing his own child, since Hiranyakashipu considered Lord Vishnu as his adversary.
Holika attempted to consume Prahalad by setting a blaze and having Prahalad sit on her lap with the expectation that he will be devoured by the fire. With Lord Vishnu looking out for Prahalad, Holika consumes to death from the fire and Prahalad stays safe.
